The assassination of Elie Hasrouni, a native of the Southern Lebanese village of Ain Ebel and a local political activist, comes as another earnest reminder of the enduring culture of impunity that dominates a state which is incapable and unwilling to protects its citizens.
The abduction and the subsequent murder of Hasrouni, in an area under the mandate of the UNSCR 1701, upheld by the UN peacekeeper, bears a striking resemblance to the assassination of Lokman Slim, as the logistical and tactical capabilities of the hit squad indicates a similar pattern and perpetrators to these crimes as well as to many others which have targeted Lebanese citizens in the South and beyond, amongst them Joe Bejjani, Mounir Abou Rjeily, Antoine Dagher and many others.
The Lokman Slim Foundation calls upon the international community as well as the various Human Rights bodies to take tangible and swift actions to address the continued violation of human rights and to end the string of murders and the complicity of the Lebanese state in the cover ups including the August 4, 2020 Beirut Port explosion.
